Global Debt Levels Hit Record High, Raising Long-Term Risks
Global debt has reached a new record, according to a major international financial report, raising concerns about long-term financial stability and economic resilience.
Government borrowing has surged since the pandemic as countries financed stimulus programs, defense spending, and climate investments. At the same time, higher interest rates have increased the cost of servicing that debt.
Several emerging markets are facing growing pressure as they refinance loans at much higher rates, while heavily indebted developed economies are struggling with rising budget deficits.
“High debt makes the global economy more vulnerable to shocks,” warned a senior official at an international financial institution. “It limits governments’ ability to respond to future crises.”
Economists say debt management and fiscal discipline will become increasingly important as the world transitions to a slower-growth, higher-interest-rate environment.
